it has begun

2016-01-20_0009 It has begun. Leaves are embarking on their colorful journey, peeking out from within our massive green-ness and my eyes have commenced to search the treetops and bushes. With the arrival of this begiling season, my memory vividly displays favorite, well loved scenes.

  • Our little blond Jonathan running through the fallen leaves, calling them pumpkin patches, his laughter sweet, carefree and innocent.
  • Our Joel, off to college, packaging up beautiful leaves and sending them to me, remembering how I truly savor every bit of autumn glory.
  • Our Hannah enlarging a shot of the sun's rays finding themselves peeking over a large burnt orange colored  leaf, framed and ready to hang.
  • With a yard full of elderly oaks, hickories and maples, our family gathering many times each fall to rake leaves, loading them on a tarp and dragging them to the curb. A romp in the leaf piles always adding to our joy. (There are only the two of us now...we miss our sweet helpers.)
  • A glorious display of fall foliage opening before us as we drive through the deep woods in northern Wisconsin...sacred and breathtaking.
  • My sister and I walking around our neighborhood taking pictures of the spectacular trees and bushes in full display at the end of October. She loves them too.

I almost ache with a fondness for this season. Adding to the picture: bright orange pumpkins, bittersweet curling around and through bushes, late summer flowers with a worn, rich beauty, the late afternoon sun lazily hanging on and the squirrels busily collecting acorns.

It has begun. Every day brings new discoveries of color and I am astonished that we never tire of it. This sweet season drops by and spreads its wonder every year. It only gets better from here!

But I must admit with Peggy Horton: “Ah, September! You are the doorway to the season that awakens my soul... but I must confess that I love you only because you are a prelude to my beloved October.”

Oh, yes, it only gets better from here.

Have a wonder-filled day.
