This Dr. Seuss rhyme, taken from, I Can Read with my Eyes Shut, must be the wisdom behind Page Pals, a new program at Harrison Elementary School. Kids on Course encourage kids to DREAM BIG and learning to read is a huge part of fueling those dreams. So volunteers were asked to come in and spend a bit of time listening to new little readers.
I am one of those volunteers. Every Wednesday for half an hour I slip into the kindergarten classroom during their open reading time. Eager eyes look up as my list is surveyed. I call out a name and the chosen one breaks into a big grin. A book is eagerly selected and the reading begins. I have enjoyed sitting in the tiny chairs, near these beginners, enthusiastic to succeed. I listen. I help. I encourage. I pat the back and say, "Great reading! Thank you for letting me listen to you. Good job!"
Reading is essential. Tommy dePoala states, "Reading is important, because, if you can read, you can learn anything about everything and everything about anything." I say kudos to Kids on Course for truly coming alongside children and enabling them to spark their dreams and open up their worlds by helping them to grow in their ability to read.
